Build a Term's Worth of Retrieval Quizzes in One Sitting (With AI)

Retrieval practice — getting students to pull information out of their heads rather than re-reading it — is one of the few classroom strategies with genuinely strong evidence behind it. The problem is never whether to do it. It's the prep. Writing five fresh recall questions for every lesson, spacing them so old content keeps coming back, and building an answer key each time is exactly the kind of quiet, repetitive work that eats a free period.

This is a job AI does well, because the task is narrow and you already know what "good" looks like. Here are four prompts that build your quiz bank, ready to copy and adapt.

1. The daily starter quiz

"I teach [subject] to Year [X]. Create a 5-question retrieval starter quiz on [topic we covered last lesson]. Mix recall (define, state, list) with one application question. Keep questions short enough to fit on a slide, and give me a separate answer key at the end."

This is your bread and butter — the "do now" that settles the room while you take the roll. Ask for the answer key as a separate block so you can show the questions without revealing answers.

2. Spaced recall — bring back old content

"Here are the last four topics I've taught in order: [list them]. Build a 6-question quiz that pulls mostly from the two OLDEST topics, with one or two questions from recent material. This is for spaced retrieval, so I want students revisiting things they're starting to forget."

The trick with retrieval practice is spacing — testing content a week or three after you taught it, right as it's fading. AI is good at weighting a quiz toward older material once you tell it the sequence. This is the prompt that stops your quizzes from only ever covering last lesson.

3. Multiple-choice with built-in misconceptions

"Write 5 multiple-choice questions on [topic] for Year [X]. Each question needs 4 options. For the wrong answers, use common misconceptions or typical student errors — not random distractors. After each question, tell me in one line what misconception each wrong option is testing for."

Good multiple-choice is hard to write because the wrong answers have to be tempting. Asking AI to base distractors on real misconceptions gives you questions that actually diagnose what students misunderstand — and the one-line explanations tell you what to reteach if lots of hands go up for option C.

4. Two-tier difficulty from the same content

"Take this list of quiz questions [paste them] and give me two versions: a support version with simpler wording and a small hint in each question, and an extension version that adds a 'why' or 'what if' follow-up. Keep the same core content in both."

One quiz, two entry points, no extra planning. Hand the support version to students who need a way in and the extension version to those who'd otherwise finish in ninety seconds and switch off.

Make it a bank, not a one-off

The real time-saver isn't any single quiz — it's doing this in bulk. Open one chat, run prompt one for each of the next two weeks' lessons, then run prompt two once a week to fold old content back in. Paste the lot into a doc, and you've built a term's worth of starters in a single sitting.

A word of caution: always read the answer key before you use it. AI is strong on structure and phrasing but will occasionally get a fact or a calculation wrong, and a confidently wrong answer key in front of a class is worse than no quiz at all. Thirty seconds of checking keeps you safe.

Retrieval practice works. The only thing standing between you and doing it every lesson was the prep — and that part just got a lot faster.
